About ovarian cyst..?

i'm 20 years old and i found out that i had a small ovarian cyst about 4 months ago and i was given birth control pills to help it go away. i'm not sure which side the cyst is on, but i'm beginning to feel pain on my lower left side and i don't know if that has anything to do with the cyst. but then when i pass gas it tends to go away slowly, but not completely. i still feel something on my lower left side right now, but it's not painful. this is the second time i've felt it, the first time was last month. can someone tell me if they've felt the way i've felt? and what i can do to minimize to the pain if it happens again? thanks.

About ovarian cyst..?
Hi.. :) I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing a lot of discomfort now.

There are many many types of ovarian cyst. I assume that you have already done an ultrasound, and therefore was diagnosed with a small ovarian cyst. And considering your age (20 years old) and the treatment that was given... I think you have a functional cyst. It's less likely to be a fibroid cyst as it would show very differently on the ultrasound.

I think there is no need for you to worry. Functional cysts are harmless and they rarely cause symptoms, unless it is really huge and obstructing the surrounding structures in your body. This is HIGHLY unlikely, because the cyst would NOT grow so fast over 4 months! :) And even if it causes pain, it certainly doesn't get relieved by passing out gas.

I feel that the pain and discomfort that you are experiencing has got something to do with your bowels instead of the ovary. How frequently have you been passing motion? Has it changed lately? Are you experiencing constipation? Do you have chronic diarrhoea?

Constipation is the commonest cause of large bowel obstruction in the young. So eat more fruits, vegetables and drink lots of water! :) Other possibilities are diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. It is important that a doctor asks you more questions to determine the nature of the pain/discomfort you are experiencing.

If the pain persists and you are very disturbed by it, then I advice that you see a doctor. What I have written are merely suggestions, from the impression that I'm getting with limited information.

So, all the best, dear! :)
Reply:you might be having a stroke
Reply:the birth control pill works only if it is a hormonal cyst. you may want to check with your doctor again to see if it is a fibroid cyst. fibroid cysts will not shrink with horomone treatment. don't wait too long to see your doctor. it can turn out to be very serious. i know from experience.
Reply:Yep. I've had ovarian cysts on and off since i was 16 - and that was a while ago. Mine were not hormonal, but stress induced.

When you ovulate, you tend to switch sides per month - one month the left, one the right, etc. Cysts tend to flair up and hurt when you ovulate on that side.

Cysts also tend to "pop" sometimes. that can lead to a sudden severe pain that goes to a dull pain that lessens over the next couple of days. Keep an eye on your temperature - if you have a fever for more than 24 hours, you could have an infected cyst and should go see the doctor about it. Otherwise, the popped cyst will heal on its own and go away.
