Anyone have pilonidal cyst? what were your symptoms?

I have pretty bad pain in the tail bone area but I don't really feel a cyst there however it is red and feels really inflammed. At first when I woke in the morning with this pain I thought maybe I just had a bad pimple with an awful lot of pressure but now I don't thinkso, it hurt a lot last night too and it hurts sitting, the pain gets worse at times and then settles a bit, I have only had it for a few days, any ideas? Does it sound like a pilonidal cyst. When you had a cyst could you actually feel a cyst in there or was it too deep?

Anyone have pilonidal cyst? what were your symptoms?
The best diagnosis via the web is that yes- you are describing a pilonidal cyst. It's actually a birth defect, believe it or not- and one of the most common, although folks don't think of them that way. It originally formed when you were a fetus and your spinal cord closed to form your backbone. A bit of skin was trapped in a fold, along with possibly a hair follicle and sweat gland. Sometimes they sit there for years, lifetimes in some cases, and never do anything. Sometimes, though, that sweat gland and hair decide to go on overtime. Without an exit pore, it all has nowhere to go, and what you recognize as a cyst forms. There is a chance yours has a small opening and can drain a little, which would explain why it comes and goes. Unfortunately the absolute cure means a minor surgery. In the meantime, you can make yourself more comfortable by soaking your tush in a hot bath. That will encourage it to drain a bit, if it can. If it is just a pimple or boil, it will form a head and drain, and though it's messy and uncomfortable, that will be it. But to be safest, you should go see the doctor for an evaluation. The cyst will get bigger, and more painful, until it makes it really impossible to sit or think about anything else except your painful tail. It may feel like a lump, hard or soft, depending on how close to the skin surface it is and how large the cyst actually is. Size isn't really critical, because the size really doesn't seem to have much relationship to the pain it can cause. Though the cure sounds radical, and it will take a week out of your life to recouperate, it's actually not as bad or as painful as the worsening cyst can get. So soak your tush, and call the doctor for an appointment to get it taken care of.
Reply:Yes I have had one 35 years ago very painful and it won't go away on it's own. It will subside and then return I had surgery.

I was told it was a ingrown hair that grows back in your skin and wraps around your tail bone forming a Pilonidal sinus very very painful. Go to your doctors and have it treated the longer you have it the more painful it gets.

I hope this helps.

Alan.
