Cyst in Fetal Brain at 37 weeks?

I am currently 37 weeks pregnant. Yay full term! Well last week I had an ultrasound. They found a cyst about the size of a dime in the fluid surrounding the baby’s brain. The doctor is a little concerned about the size. I know cysts aren’t uncommon, but everything I have read says they should disappear by 28 weeks. The doctor also said he had never seen one this size this far along…. That makes me a little uneasy. I’m 37 and it’s still there. Has anybody out there had the same thing with their baby. What was the outcome? The doctor has talked about the possibility of autism and Down syndrome or having to go in after the baby is born and removing it, due to the size causing pressure on the brain.. I’m a little worried, but I am staying positive. Anyone who knows about this kind of thing or has been through it some reassurance would be nice. What happened in your sitch? I as well as the doctors are also worried because the baby is not gaining weight like it should….

"CASE HISTORY A





After maternal spotting, a PSG at 33 (repeated at 37) weeks' gestation showed an otherwise normal fetus with an intracranial fluid-filled, hypoechoic, flaccid structure 7.5 cm in diameter by the right lateral ventricle (Figs 1 2, 3, and 4) reported as a probable arachnoid cyst. The case was discussed with neonatology, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery consultants. With an otherwise normal fetus without hydrocephalus or midline shift, standard expectant obstetric care was advised to proceed with delivery attendance by neonatology."





TBH this does not seem to suggest any great risk to your baby, just that they would maybe need to have an neonatal unit on standby at the delivery and obviously observe your baby closely.





I would try not to worry. I had to take medication throughout my pregnancy and they scared me stiff by saying that there was a possibly that my son would experience "withdrawals" to the medication when he was born etc etc etc. Well he didn't he was just fine! Came home after a day and half in hospital and 13 months later is a happy, healthy little lad!!





Doctors sometimes voice their concerns too readily and scare patients. But then on the flip side if they don't they are accused of "withholding information".





The best person to speak to is your doctor, tell him exactly what you are worried about and that you want some definite answers and what the probability if risk to your baby is. I'm sure that everything will be fine, if it was a severe danger they'd be talking about emergency C-sections etc and as they don't seem to have mentioned this then it sounds like it will be fine for your to deliver vaginally, which wouldn't be the case if there was a severe risk to your baby.

Reply:I really don't know very much about this but after reading the two other replies I just had to write to you. Just because it might be 'God's Will' doesn't mean that you have to take this lying down. You should think about talking to some other doctors and getting other opinions. Don't worry about offended your current Dr, this is you baby's future that you are fighting for here, if it upsets them then get a new Dr. Also find autism and DS specialists in your area and talk to them---the odds are that they have see cases similar to yours more times than a general pediatrician or your obgyn would've. Just gather as much knowledge as you can. I'm sure this is a frightening time for you, you are in my prayers and I wish you the best.
