Ovarian Cyst Question?

I'm 21 years old and I have a cyst on my left Ovary that is the size of a baseball. My boyfriend works for Kaiser and cant add me to his insurance until Jan of 08'. I'm thinking of waiting to have the surgery done until then, has anyone ever waited to do that? If so, did anything extreme happen? The doctor said that the only risks I have to watch for is that the cyst could erupt or twist off then I would have to get emergency surgery done.

If I were to do the surgery sooner, does anyone know the cost of the surgery without having insurance?

Any information would be helpful about cysts and the surgery that is required for it. Thank you.

Ovarian Cyst Question?
Oh goodness. The longer you wait, the larger (or more hemorrhagic) the cyst could become...but too, your BF's insurance may not cover a pre-existing condition, or if it did, the usual waiting period is 18 months...and I know you wouldn't want to go that long.

Ummm, talk to your doctor there at Kaiser (which one?) and see if there is any kind of payment arrangements that can be made. You really need that cyst removed before it causes irreparable damage. It is a doctors statement to help a patient live a healthy life.

Good luck.
Reply:I had a cyst very similar to yours but on my right ovary. My doctor told me I could wait but it could rupture and I could bleed to death. It could also get big enough to start effecting other organs ie: intestines, bowels....On the other hand, it could just rupture and nothing happen. However, if you leave it, it will start effecting your sex life. It will start to hurt terribly when you have intercourse as mine did.

My best advice is to not wait because you're basically playing russian roulette with your life. Without insurance, you're looking at least $5,000. for day surgery. They'll probably do a Diagnostic Laproscopic Surgery and decide once they get in there if the cyst alone needs to be removed or if it has become a situation where the cyst and the ovary needs to be removed. The surgery is considered minor day surgery where they make two very small incisions about an inch (one in your belly button and one right above your private) but if your ovary has to be removed then the incision might be bigger.

You really shouldn't play around with these things. If you've got decent credit, take out a personal or healthcare loan and have this thing taken care of.
